How do you clean a Taurus PT24/7 Pro Pistol?
I just purchased a Taurus PT 24/7 Pro 40S&W pistol. I have Read It best to keep it cleaned & oiled to keep it from jamming. How do you clean it and what items do I need to keep it operating in tip top shape? Also what is the best ammo to use?
I have owned cleaned SW Sigmas, Glocks, and Rugers-all polymer. I no longer own them but can help you.
Step 1. After dropping the mag and checking the chamber, disassemble gun into major components. Use degreaser to spray off carbon on all metal parts. If fowling persists in rails of slide, use a plastic-bristle brush and scrub and spray again. Also scrub areas outside of barrel and get them clean. Take POLYMER-SAFE degreaser and spray onto cleaning patch. Wipe down all areas on top of frame and anywhere on the frame where there is carbon or other fouling.
Step 2. Clean barrel on the inside (bore part) using a combination of Shooter’s Choice MC-7 and Sweet’s 7.62 solvent (you might not need Sweet’s for extra copper fouling removal if MC-7 gets it all out). DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS CLEANER ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE GUN AND FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS! THESE CHEMICALS ARE HIGHLY POTENT AND WILL COMPROMISE STEEL, PLASTIC, AND WOOD!
Step 3. Clean the top areas of all magazines that were used with degreaser and do not lubricate with oil. Use a silicone rag if you want some rust protection. Use extreme care if you disassemble a magazine. Springs are VERY vulnerable to abuse when removed/replaced from housing.
Step 4. When all cleaner is wiped and removed, oil your gun per instructions ONLY where advised and keep a super thin coat in the barrel unless it is stainless or tennifer-traeted (like Glock).
Step 5. Reassemble gun and do a function check with a dummy shell. Also remove any excess oil that can be seen that could cause excess buil-up the next time you go shooting. DO NOT OVER-OIL YOUR GUN.
Polymer guns need very little lubricant and I suggest Shooter’s Choice FP-10.
Things to remember: Follow ALL directions on cleaners, Do not overclean the polymer frame, and do not over-oil. And as always, safety first.
Ammo to use? 115gr and 124gr pistol ball will always be the most reliable. Hollowpoints should feed fine, but break-in your gun first before relying on hollowpoint to feed reliably.
